A new generation of sky surveys and giant telescopes will open a new window on the nearby, as well as the distant, Universe.

 

The Giant Magellan Telescope Organization is hosting a three-day conference on the topics of resolved stellar populations and galaxy formation. Scientists from around the world will gather at the Asilomar Conference Grounds on the Monterey Peninsula in California to discuss the state of the field in topics ranging from using galaxies as cosmological probes, near-field and far-field connections, and galactic archeology.

 

A gala conference banquet will be held at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

 

OVERVIEW

For the last 15 years, resolved stellar populations of nearby galaxies have rivaled distant galaxies in terms of their return on our understanding of both dark matter and galaxy formation.

The detailed dynamics, chemical and star formation histories of nearby objects provide a view that is complementary to the average history of the universe that can be stitched together from observing large ensembles of unresolved galaxies. In this conference, we will consider the questions “What can uniquely be learned about dark matter and the physics of galaxy formation from observations of resolved stellar populations?” and “How can we ensure that the next generation of facilities accomplishes this?” Through invited and contributed talks on state-of-the-art, near-field research on dark matter and galaxy formation and evolution, we aim to (i) pinpoint the highest priority open questions and (ii) foster new collaborative connections with an eye on answering these questions with next generation facilities.

Registration deadline: September 1, 2015. No registration fee is required. Travel support is provided for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. Space is limited. A small number of contributed talks will be accepted. The talk sessions will be complemented by an extensive poster session. Abstracts will be requested via email once you register. Poster abstract submission deadline: September 1, 2015 (extended).
